I was listening to a podcast that said only one in eight Americans keep their New Year’s resolutions, and most of them have already given up by now.
I am sure there is a ton of research about why this is true, but I have come to my own conclusion. For me, everything comes back to the fact that life is busy and with so much going on it’s almost impossible not to be stressed. When stressed, it’s easy to give up on things, like resolutions or nurturing a relationship with God. Everyone is trying to create a sense of balance in their lives, and finding ways to slow down is a significant part of maintaining balance. And while a monthly spa pass would be fabulous, my budget isn’t going to allow that. However, I have found two ways to add some intentionality to my busy life to help me recharge. Coffee For One: This small morning ritual before anyone else in my house gets up starts my day off with a little time to connect. I don’t have any formalized prayer, but allowing the quiet helps me to create some space for God. Work It Out: I love the gym, and it is one of my favorite places to find God. Give it a try! It’s amazing how it allows my mind to open to receive whatever God wants me to. Besides, remember what Elle Woods said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t kill their husbands. They just don’t.” Something I am sure my husband is pleased about. For me, being intentional is a lot easier, and less stressful, than trying to add anything else into my life. Be kind, do what you can and make room for God to do the rest.
