My social media feeds are currently filled with graduations, moves and other life changes. It’s a reminder that the one consistent in life is change. Sometimes change is great, and other times not so much. And in life, we experience both.
Last year, I had one of the biggest life changes to date: I got married. I spent a lot of time leading up to the moment worrying about small details and big issues. Worrying also became a consistent in my life. But a funny thing happened the day before the wedding. As people were starting to travel to the area, I stopped worrying and started to be present. I stopped worrying to the point that when a major issue came up 10 minutes before I was going to walk down the aisle, I didn’t freak out. My cool-as-a-cucumber reaction was based on the fact that I was totally in the moment and embracing the joy of that moment. And where there is joy, there isn’t room for worry. Worrying can focus us so much on the future that I personally can forget that God and life are in the current moment. This is one of my favorite parts about being around children. They are so entirely in the present, and they are blissful because of this. This has been one of the biggest graces I get from being around children. Unfortunately, it’s a grace that I often lose as quickly as it’s found. That is one of the reasons I guard my daily prayer time. Before the world’s busyness takes over, prayer allows me to connect to God and remember what is most important. In the end, change and worry could always be around the next corner, but being spiritually fed puts it all in its proper place.
